Part of our experience is navigating the “elements” and recognizing that this often makes the adventure experience even better!
Assume that your camp is going ahead unless we advise you before the departure date. We do not cancel camps because of wet weather unless the conditions are deemed as dangerous.
All participants are advised to bring effective wet weather gear with them (as directed on our “What To Bring” list).
This is not possible due to the expedition nature of our programs. Our departure and arrival times are fixed and will be detailed on your booking confirmation.

Rite of Passage is a term used to recognise a period of change and create an experience and celebration to acknowledge this transition in life.
Birth, marriage, death, graduation, “schoolies”, your first job…these are all examples of Rite of Passage moments. Sometimes these are things that are planned or potentially things that happen to us that we are not expecting.
They’re often celebrations, and sometimes they are moments to acknowledge, let go and find ways to move positively into a new phase of life as they recognise the transition.
At AdventureWorks we focus on the period of time that young people are transitioning Into Adulthood which generally takes place between the ages of 13 – 18.
In a successful Rite of Passage or transition period, there is also a period of time (often years) when the family, elders, teachers spend time supporting, guiding, teaching and celebrating the period which prepares for change in role or status.
AdventureWorks WA Into The Wild School adventure experience is designed to support your teen on their journey Into Adulthood.
Our programs are always outdoors, connecting with nature and adventure. There are no phones or electronic devices to make sure our experience is of the highest quality.
We use a traditional story, challenge, and honour framework to help the teens consider and discuss life’s transitions and think about what this needs to look like as they move into the future.
Bonds will be made with their peer group, and a closeness created through many special shared experiences and challenges.
Story
The group will engage in meaningful conversations about current life challenges and hear stories from adults about significant moments in their lives.
Challenge
Into The Wild provides opportunities for outdoor physical and emotional challenges to equip teens with a strong sense of achievement and resilience as well as stimulating a shift in their self-awareness .
Honour
All participants are recognised and acknowledged for their strengths and gifts on the experience. This acknowledgement and support leaves a lasting imprint.
Students can often get homesick especially if they haven’t spent much time away from home. We work with the child/teen and the whole group to support them to stay and complete the camp.
Generally, if a student can get through the first night and build bonds, they are more likely to stay. If the issue become significant or it is impacting on the experience of the whole group then we will contact the parent, let the child/teen call home or if necessary, make arrangements for them to be picked up.
Overall, it is better that the student does not think that leaving is an option. There is a risk they will use this as a backup or opt out option if things get a bit tough. We want them to push through and realise what resilience they have and reap the benefits of how good that can feel and the growth they can experience.
In the case of an emergency at home, you will be able to contact your child via our team either on our daytime number or after-hours number provided to you prior to your camp.
Additionally, you will be able to organise the pickup of your child if required.
In the case of an emergency on camp, we will call the emergency contact provided to us on the medical consent form. Please make sure this number is available 27/7 while you child is away.
Please see our Equipment List for a detailed list of what to pack.
We understand technology is an integral part of every young person life and we acknowledge that it is unusual in our world to not be in constant contact with our children. We have in place a process with that will allow us to give or receive messages in an emergency. It is healthy for both the student and the parent to create a separation during this camp.
One of the principles for an AW camp is that of Separation. Separation from technology, separation from everyday life and separation from the norms of family and social groups.
It is uncommon for young people today to not be connected to tech, distracted and busy. The space we create allows the young person to be present without distractions, connect deeply with the group they are with, and connect with the environment. They will find themselves having conversations and time to notice what is going on for them, physically, intellectually, and emotionally.
There is rising evidence that addiction to technology is becoming a serious issue, as we receive high doses of endorphins from constantly looking at our phones. Most students comment how nice it is not to think about what is happening on the phone and after a few days lose the compulsion to keep checking. As no one has a phone it makes it easier to relax and be present.
This can be beneficial on a regular basis for all humans and a challenge that every family could attempt from time to time and observe the difference it makes to how we feel, in building connection and being more present.
